Why I like Martha

Out of the Doctor's companions, I would definitely choose Martha over Rose. Why, you ask? Obviously, because I can identify with Martha better than with Rose. It's not that each of these girls comes from a different background. It's not just that Martha is an intelligent, educated young woman with an objective in her life. It's not even Rose's bleached hair. It's how Martha thinks.
Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Martha is a medical student. When she meets the Doctor, she is single, there are some problems in her family so she is quite happy to get away from it all (after some initial hesitation). I love how capable she is - she knows what to do and is invaluable whenever medical attention is necessary. But the situation that stole my heart was right at the end of her journey with the Doctor.
There was trouble (as there always is when the Doctor is around), the Doctor got imprisoned by the Master, but Martha managed to get away. She spent a whole year travelling the world and talking to people about the Doctor and persuading them that he needs them. After the year, she finally managed to save the Doctor. When all was well again and she was supposed to resume her place in the Tardis, she came to him and told him that she was leaving. She knew she had responsibility for her family, so she decided to give up the greatest adventure of her life to be with them. That is what I admire.
Another thing was what Martha told the Doctor about this friend of hers who was in love with a boy who was looking right through her. This friend spent years pining for someone who did not even know she existed. Martha felt the same about her relationship with the Doctor and she did not want to waste time. I absolutely adore this! Such a strong, intelligent woman - when she saw the relationship had no future, she came to terms with that and got her life back. She did not let the Doctor ruin her life like Rose's. (Yes, I think the Doctor ruin's his girls' life. He does not do it on purpose, but it happens all the time.)
A young, strong woman who knows what she wants from life - those are the reasons why I like Martha!
